Having 'cold feet" about dog adoption

My two adolescent boys have been asking for a pet dog since many years ago, dating back to their primary school days. Because we did not have any domestic helper around, and my wife is the only one running the house (doing all the house chores, making sure the kids are well fed before and after school), we had put aside their request for a pet dog at home all these while.

We moved to our new dwelling place recently. And the boys are now teenagers and capable of attending to their needs independently, with minimal help. Hence, the thought of adopting a pet dog was brought up again.

I sense that my wife, who has always been afraid of pets, will definitely reject the ideas. Furthermore, it is inevitable that a pet dog will mess up the house (pooing in the hall, gnawing on objects on the floor, shedding furs on the floor etc). I can almost imagine her throwing the dog out of our balcony in fits of anger/exasperation! Hence, I was quite surprised when she finally "agreed" to get a pet dog into our family!

We went to view a dog (mixed Labrador retriever) this afternoon. The dog was adorable and friendly. Everything went well, and I thought we should have no problem in adopting the dog. But, upon returning home, my wife started to have cold feet - the daunting task of clearing up the mess created by the dog finally sink in! She told our boys that we should perhaps have a trial period of 2 weeks, before committing to having it full time with us!

I have just informed the relevant person that we will have a cooling off period to seriously reconsider our plan - and will inform her the soonest possible in 2 days.

My gut feeling is - we should probably defer the plan till later date!
